Big changes afoot for Social Security in 2017

When you hear the words "Social Security Disability," it is easy to erroneously think that Social Security is all about people living with disabilities or without the means to work a full time job and, thus, are in need of financial benefits to aid them. But Social Security encompasses many other areas. Retirees need Social Security; children, in certain cases, need Social Security; people without financial means need Social Security.

With this in mind, the changes that are coming to Social Security in 2017 are vast and many. For example, the maximum monthly benefit rose for Social Security recipients (it may have only been by $48, but it still went up). Full retirement age increased for some retirees. And some threshold have changed as a result of a new year.

But there is also a change that directly impacts Social Security disability eligibility. The income threshold that applicants had to meet or be under in order to qualify for Social Security Disability in 2016 was $1,130 per month (or $1,820 per month for people who are blind). Those figures will jump to $1,170 per month and $1,950 per month, respectively.

These may seem like minor changes at first, but they reflect an important shift in the ability for some people to qualify for these benefits. Applying for, and obtaining, Social Security Disability benefits is not an easy process. If you have questions about the process or need help with your SSDI appeal, consult with an attorney as soon as possible.
