What are the requirements for filing for SSI benefits?

Supplemental security income benefits, hereinafter referred to as SSI benefits, are important to many Southern California residents. They are available to individuals who are over the age of 65, who are disabled, and also those who are blind. In some cases children are able to secure SSI benefits if they are afflicted by these disabilities, and in addition to the SSI benefits that are federally funded some individuals may also qualify for state-supported state supplementary payments, hereinafter referred to as SSP.

In order to apply for SSI and SSP, a person must meet the following requirements in addition to those mentioned in the preceding paragraph. First, they must fill out the appropriate applications and paperwork for the desired benefits. Though some individuals choose to pursue SSI and SSP on their own, others have benefitted from the support of attorneys who work within the Social Security benefits field as they begin to work through their applications.

Next, the applicants must not earn more money that the established income limits for the SSI and SSP programs. Earning too much money may preclude an individual from receiving benefits even if they otherwise meet the necessary requirements.

Additionally an applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident who resides in the country and may not reside in a public institution where they receive support. Finally, applicants to the SSI and SSP programs must ensure that they have applied to all state and federal programs through which they may receive financial support and not only the SSI and SSP programs.

Even if an applicant meets all of the mentioned requirements it is possible that their request for benefits may be denied. Starting the SSI and SSP application process over or pursuing an appeal can be difficult, but for those who wish to continue their pursuit of benefits lawyers who work in the field can help.
