Disabilities might not qualify you for disability income

People who have spent time working are often devastated to find out that they are unable to work because of an injury or illness. Social Security Disability provides a way for these individuals to have an income while they are unable to work.

Social Security Disability isn't easy to get because you have to qualify for these benefits. Often, there is a long process that you will have to go through, which sometimes includes appeals. If you think that you might be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits, here are some eligibility points to consider:

Length of disability matters

For the purpose of Social Security Disability, the Social Security Administration set a minimum term for the disability at 12 months. This means that the condition you are suffering from must be expected to last at least 12 months or you aren't going to be eligible for benefits. The only exception to this time period is if the condition you have is expected to end in your death. This situation could bypass the 12-month minimum requirement.

Type of condition matters

You will need a diagnosis of the condition in order to qualify for Social Security Disability. If you aren't able to get a diagnosis, the burden falls on the Social Security Administration to get a diagnosis or evidence of your condition. The Social Security Administration has a list of common disabilities, so some disabilities will qualify a bit more squarely than others.

The ability to earn money matters

It isn't enough to just have a disability to qualify for Social Security Disability. Instead, the disability has to prevent you from being able to earn a living. The Social Security Administration determines if someone can engage in substantial gainful activity, which means the ability to earn an income in either a part-time or full-time capacity. It is important to note that this income earning activity doesn't necessarily have to be in your current field. Instead, it is any income earning activity. Several factors are considered here -- your age, previous experience, education and similar factors.

Throughout the process of applying for Social Security Disability, you will have to ensure that your correspondence and statements are accurate and that they address the issues at hand. This is especially important if you are going through an appeal of the decision. Learn about what you need to do throughout the process so that you can make sure you are handling your responsibilities and that your rights are being respected.
