We might call someone – or something – a nightmare if it is particularly difficult to deal with. It could be anything from your grumpy Aunt Mary to taking the SATs. And dealing with government agencies can be hard also. Applying for government benefits like Social Security Disability Insurance could be considered a nightmare.
So, why is it so hard to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits?
You’re already dealing with disability and loss of income.
The whole reason you are filing for Social Security Disability Insurance is because you’ve suffered a serious condition. This is probably not an easy time in your life. Now, you have to read and understand government regulations to keep food on your table and a roof over your head.
The application is complicated.
A checklist is provided by the SSA, but it shows a very long list of information you need to provide. Scary. The application is seven pages long and not easy to fill out. That’s one reason many people get someone to help with the application.
You have to provide a lot of supporting documents.
This includes: your Social Security card, original birth certificate or other proof of birth, proof of U. S. citizenship, U. S. military papers, W-2 forms or self-employment tax return, and medical records if you have them. Some documents have to be originals.
You have to wait for benefits to begin.
The decision on an SSDI application typically takes about 30 to 90 days from date of application. There are some disabilities that are processed more quickly, but the 30-90 days estimate is the norm. If denied, you can request reconsideration and go through an appeal process. However, you may wait 12 months just to get a hearing. Social Security Disability Insurance payments, if approved, begin six months after your disability started.
It May Be a Nightmare, But You Don’t Have to Go It Alone.
Just like you need support after a tough nightmare, you can get support to help with your Social Security Disability Insurance application.
