What is the 'disability onset date' and when is mine?

It may seem like an insulting topic on some level, but the Social Security Administration will always try to figure out a disabled person's "disability onset date." This is the date when the individual living with the disability became unable to work as a result of his or her disability. Of course, to the subject of this scenario, the date is all too real -- and in fact, they may have been dealing with the effects of the disability far before the official disability onset date.

But the point here is that this date is a very important part of your Social Security disability benefits eligibility. The SSA will parse through a lot of evidence to come to a formal conclusion about your disability onset date, including:

  • The allegations and information that you provide. Your official statement is important, so make sure you are prepared and ready to say what you want to say.
  • Your work history. When you stopped working will be an important factor.
  • Medical evidence. Your medical records will be looked at, and any medical evidence that you can provide will be helpful in this regard.
  • Other evidence and statements. Depending on your case, the accounts and statements of hospital and medical staff could be used in support of your claims.

Every case is unique, and every person who applies for Social Security disability benefits needs to prepare himself or herself for the matter of the disability onset date. Consult with an attorney if you have questions about the process.
