Don't let the SSA backlog hinder denied claim appeal

California residents may be surprised to hear that the Social Security Administration shells out $197 billion in disability payments to 10.5 million in Social Security Disability benefits and 8 million in Supplemental Security Income. Though this may sound like a whopping number, the reality is that no one is getting rich receiving this payment-with an average payment of $1,037, it is barely enough to keep a family out of poverty.

Now, according to data revealed by the Social Security Administration, the benefits are coming too late. As many may be aware, one of the medical requirements for receiving disability benefits is that the disability must last longer than a year or could even result in death. And given current average wait time of two years and more than one million people on the wait list for an administrative appeal on their denied claim, some applicants end up getting their claim approved after they have passed away.

The Social Security Administration is working hard to reduce the backlog-hiring hundreds of new administrative judges and support staff. According to the agency's acting chief of staff, there are also attempts to expand the program that quickly awards benefits to people with serious illnesses and conditions. Though the backlog is currently less than it was a year ago, it is still more than it was five years ago.

Most initial applicants are denied in their first attempt, so those applying for benefits should not get disheartened. According to data from the SSA, most of these denials are reversed during the appeals process for those who complete the process. Given the backlog, it may be beneficial to consult an experienced attorney for strategies to get a case to the appeal quicker or to get through to the serious illness category.
