Millions of Americans have no long-term disability insurance plan

If you have been injured in an accident, and you have good health insurance coverage, your insurer will help you pay for your emergency treatment, hospitalization and other medical expenses. However, if you are seriously injured and cannot return to work, health insurance won't help you with lost wages. For that, you will need some other form of insurance or benefits.

Many employers offer long-term disability insurance as an option with their benefits packages, but a great number of Americans choose to go without it. According to some reports, only 40 percent of employees choose to take out disability insurance when they have the option. And, of course, many more Americans don't even have the option.

For those who were injured on the job, workers' compensation may be able to help with long-term disability. For everyone else, the options are limited. This is one reason why the Social Security Disability Insurance system is so important.

Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSD, is a system designed to provide Americans with benefits after they have been rendered unable to return to work due to illness or injury. While SSD is different from private insurance plans, the dollar amount of benefits you receive through the system will be based in part on your work history.

While SSD is meant to provide all workers with a source of benefits should they become disabled, it isn't easy for every worker to actually get all the benefits they need. Many claims are denied at first, requiring the applicant to go through an appeals process.

Skilled legal help can greatly increase your chances of getting all the benefits you need. Speak to a Social Security attorney to learn about your options.
