Can I receive SSD benefits for the rest of my life?

When a Social Security Disability benefits claim has been filed and approved, and the benefits are expected to begin coming in soon, the recipient may think the process is finally complete. But, is this true? Does someone continue to receive SSD benefits for the rest of their life once they are approved?

The Social Security Administration reviews recipient's cases periodically in a process known as "continuing disability review." Through this process, the SSA identifies people who may no longer be disabled, as per the SSA's requirement. Reviews are conducted depending on the classification given to the case by the SSA.

If medical improvement is expected, then the SSA will review the case within six to 18 months after the benefits begin. If improvement is possible, a case is not typically reviewed before three years have elapsed. On the other extreme is the situation where medical improvement is not expected, and reviews are not conducted before seven years have passed. In addition to these scheduled reviews, it is also possible that the Social Security Administration will conduct a review if someone returns to work or is informed that one's condition has improved, either personally or through medical evidence. Also, if a new treatment emerges for the disabling condition, it is also possible that the SSA will schedule a review.

It is easier to succeed in a review than it is to originally qualify to receive SSD benefits, so Orange County residents don't have to fret too much. But, it is important to ensure one answers the related forms accurately and thoroughly, so as to not trigger a review. It might be beneficial to consult an experienced attorney for guidance.
